RECRUITMENT & RETENTION
The Recruitment and Retention Committee was formed by Brunswick County Administrator, Charlette Woolridge with the support of the Emergency Services Advisory Board in 2006.  Recruitment and Retention Committee Members are:

  • Wayne Bowen, Dolphin Volunteer Fire Department

  • Devon Clary, E911 Coordinator

  • Connie Moore, Brunswick Volunteer Rescue Squad – Administrator

  • Bryant Rifkind, Lawrenceville Volunteer Fire Department

  • Allen Richardson, Central Volunteer Rescue Squad  \

The committee was charged with the task of improving volunteer recruitment and retention efforts for fire and rescue agencies in the county.  The first meeting was held in November 2006, and committee members identified several goals for the remainder of fiscal year 2007.  The goals are:

  • Continue to partner with Southside Virginia Community College and Brunswick Senior High School to maintain the EMT-B program at Brunswick Senior High School.
  • Host a prom event to make high school students aware of the dangers of drinking and driving and to promote the services available to citizens by local fire, rescue, and police organizations.
  • Promote EMS Week within the local school system
  • Promote Fire Prevention Week within the local school system
  • Seek Recruitment and Retention funding from grant sources and local government
  • Prepare promotional material for fire and rescue organizations to disseminate to the public to market the benefits of volunteerism
  • Educate the public using local media

This was used in conjunction with a mock motor vehicle crash
sponsored by the Recruitment & Retention Committee in efforts
to  raise awareness to high school students of the dangers of
drinking and driving. Students were offered an up-close look
at unit. Additional pictures from the event can be seen by clicking on the photo album icon below.

What are volunteers?
Volunteers are people who enjoy helping others. The unselfishly give their time to help people in need. They are willing to go the extra mile to complete tasks and enjoy facing new challenges every day. Volunteers may work in fire and emergency services as their profession. Other volunteers work n professions outside of friend emergency services. No matter what career path a person chooses, they still can volunteer with local fire and rescue departments.
